Miss Thistlebottom's Hobgoblins
by Theodore M. Bernstein
The old adage, “rules are made
to be broken” has never been as well defended as in MISS THISTLEBOTTOM’S
HOBGOBLINS. Throughout the book, Bernstein asserts that we
have been indoctrinated with English usage rules that lack flexibility
and evoke fear, confusion and frustration in writers. There are times
when splitting an infinitive or ending a sentence with a preposition
makes sense.
Peter Moore had to
make a decision late one night; buy a Tae-Bo for Seniors video tape
and slip into his forties like a ton of bricks or fulfill a teen-age
fantasy borne while watching an Italian movie featuring a young,
vibrant and very sexy Sophia Loren riding a Vespa in Rome.
We all say what we love about Italy is the art, beautiful coastlines, history, style and shopping—we can’t get enough. When in fact, what we really love, the driving force we all go to Italy is for the food. Try and deny it all you want—but it’s the truth. And Matthew Fort makes no bones about it.
